Yoga for Hypertensive Patients

Hypertension, otherwise known as high blood pressure, is a condition that is mainly caused by stress. Symptoms of this disease range from headache, palpitations, breathlessness, fatigue and dizziness. Other factors contributing to this disease include being overweight, lack of physical activity, excessive consumption of Sodium, low intake of Potassium, smoking, and repeated infections of the kidney, which plays the role of secreting the natural chemical, rennin, to control one’s blood pressure. Certain drugs and hormonal disorders are also factors that contribute to hypertension.

HBP may lead to other more serious conditions such as a heart attack, stroke, Coronary Artery Disease and paralysis, which may be life-threatening. Yoga is extremely useful and is commonly prescribed by Ayurvedic physicians to help prevent and treat hypertension in India. Yoga practice does not refer to only exercising Yogic postures, but also include maintaining a Yogic diet and lifestyle.

Eating a healthy diet is essential in the successful treatment of hypertension. Patients should keep watch of their cholesterol level and their weight. Food items rich in Sodium should be avoided, but instead intake items with high Potassium. Observing a vegetarian diet is advisable as eating food items with high protein causes unfavourable effects on the body, such as the built up of unwanted toxins and increasing one’s weight. Intake of fatty food items such as ghee, butter, cream and eggs should also be stopped. Smoking and alcohol consumption should be avoided at all cost as well as discontinuing the habits of drinking tea and coffee.

Avoiding mental stress is also vital for hypertensive patients. A balanced lifestyle will greatly help patients’ success in managing the stress factor in their lives. Practicing meditation has also been said to be very effective in releasing stress. Apart from that, HBP patients must be very careful with the Yogasanas practised as not all are suitable for them.
